The Labour Minister revealed to the meeting, the guidelines for the implementation of ILO C188 on working in fishing. He said that ILO’s Director-General Mr. Guy Ryder appreciated the Thai governments’ formation on standards for fishery workers as an example to ASEAN countries, and thanked for all parties for their cooperation and hard work in helping to promote valuable work in the fishing sector under C188.

On March 14, 2019, Labour Minister, H.E. Police General Adul Sangsingkeo presided over the meeting on guidelines for the implementation of the ILO Convention No. 188 concerning work in the fishing sector, 2007 at Prasong Rananant Conference Room, 5th floor, Ministry of Labour. The meeting included relevant agencies such as the Department of Fisheries, the Marine Department, the Department of Medical Services, the Department of Health, the Ministry of Public Health, the Command Center for Prevention and Resolution of Illegal Fishing, National Police Office, the Department of Treaties and Laws, the Department of Consular Affairs, the Office of the Council of State, the Department of Employment, the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare, the Social Security Office, the International Labour Organization and 10 fishing associations for example.
Key agendas in this meeting included the acknowledgment on the conclusion for the ratification of the ILO Convention No. 188 on January 30, 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland and the ILO’s perspective on implementation. After the ratification, Director of the ILO Office in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos Mr. Gramme Buckley, reported the progress on the draft of the Labour Protection Act B.E……and secondary legislation.
   Pol.Gen. Adul said that that ILO’s Director-General Mr. Guy Ryder recognized Thailand’s intentions and appreciated the hard work of all parties that helped promote valuable work in the fishing sector. Thailand is the 14th country of the ILO member countries and is the first country in the Asia Pacific to ratify this convention, which will allow Thailand to be recognized by the global community that there is a system that has proper measures to prevent and resolve forced labour and human trafficking problems. Convention No. 188 will help build confidence and produce a good image for the Thai fishing sector which will benefit the trade, exports and employment generate income and create fairness for all parties. Today’s meeting was thus preparation to support the next steps and for the Labour Minister to thank the ILO and everyone who was involved.
