{"id":2096,"date":"2016-06-08T17:45:48","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T17:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/?p=2096"},"modified":"2016-06-08T17:45:48","modified_gmt":"2016-06-08T17:45:48","slug":"thailand-ratifies-ilo-maritime-labour-convention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/2016\/06\/08\/thailand-ratifies-ilo-maritime-labour-convention\/","title":{"rendered":"Thailand ratifies ILO Maritime Labour Convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page-header\">\n<p class=\"createdby\">By Cliff White, Editor<\/p>\n<p class=\"createdby\">Published on Wednesday, June 08, 2016<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The government of Thailand has ratified the International Labour Organization\u2019s Maritime Labour Convention, a treaty that establishes enforcement mechanisms to guarantee global standards relating to the working and living conditions of seafarers.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand became the 77th country to ratify the treaty after Thai Minister of Labor General Sirichai Distakul deposited the instrument of ratification to ILO Director-General Guy Ryder in Geneva on Tuesday, 7 June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 by Thailand is yet another testimony of the importance of the Convention for countries worldwide, as it impacts on the manner in which they carry out maritime trade, inspect ships calling at their ports and protect the rights of the seafarers,\u201d Ryder said. \u201cThailand has more than 12.000 seafarers and a merchant fleet of 3,368,993 gross tons. I welcome this new ratification that brings one more important player in the Asia Pacific region within the scope of the MLC, 2006, thereby promoting quality shipping and providing additional protection for seafarers transiting within waters of the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2097\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2097 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/thailandILOseafoodsource.jpg\" alt=\"thailandILOseafoodsource\" width=\"318\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/thailandILOseafoodsource.jpg 318w, https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/thailandILOseafoodsource-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Source: http:\/\/www.seafoodsource.com\/news\/supply-trade\/thailand-ratifies-ilo-maritime-labour-convention<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The treaty will enter into force in Thailand on 7 June, 2017 \u2013 one year from the date of its ratification.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Maritime Labour Convention\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ilo.org\/dyn\/normlex\/en\/f?p=NORMLEXPUB:91:0::NO::P91_ILO_CODE:C186\" target=\"_blank\">Maritime Labour Convention<\/a> has the twin objectives of \u201censur[ing] the worldwide protection of the rights of seafarers and establish[ing] a level playing field for countries and shipowners committed to providing decent working and living conditions to seafarers,\u201d according to its website. It provides minimum requirements for seafarers to work on a ship, conditions of employment, minimum standards for accommodation while onboard and requirements for health and medical care.<\/p>\n<p>It also creates mechanisms for enforcement of its rules.
