Microsoft is taking part in a project in Thailand to help fight\u00a0human trafficking in the region.<\/p>\n
Chaired by\u00a0Phuket Vice Governor Teera Anantaseriwidhya, at Prince of Songkla University\u2019s Phuket Campus, the project aims to\u00a0educate youth about computers and Information Technology to equip them with the knowledge and tools to fight human trafficking.<\/p>\n
1,200 students over\u00a0 seven campuses (Phuket, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Payao, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat) are taking part in the project and will share their\u00a0knowledge with others.<\/p>\n
\u201cProviding computer and IT knowledge to students is a step in the right direction. When students learn these skills, they can broaden their knowledge and have a lot more information at their fingertips \u2013 not only about human trafficking, but other areas as well,\u201d said V\/Gov Teera.<\/p>\n
Thailand is a source, destination, and transit country for men, women, and children subjected to forced labour and sex trafficking. Significant illegal migration to Thailand presents traffickers with opportunities to coerce or defraud undocumented migrants into involuntary servitude or sexual exploitation. In its latest report, Thailand has been rated by the US State Department as a \u201cTier 2 Watchlist\u201d nation for human trafficking, one step above the Tier 3 rating for countries with the worst human-trafficking records.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am quite concerned about youth in isolated rural areas as they are vulnerable and at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking.\u201d Teera noted. \u201cThese kinds of projects are very essential to alleviate the situation,\u201d<\/p>\n
