{"id":2697,"date":"2019-05-15T14:28:29","date_gmt":"2019-05-15T14:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/?p=2697"},"modified":"2019-05-15T14:28:29","modified_gmt":"2019-05-15T14:28:29","slug":"high-profile-defendants-get-extra-jail-time-for-money-laundering-human-trafficking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/2019\/05\/15\/high-profile-defendants-get-extra-jail-time-for-money-laundering-human-trafficking\/","title":{"rendered":"High-profile defendants get extra jail time for money laundering human trafficking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Criminal Court yesterday convicted 44 defendants, including a former high-ranking military officer and ex-local politicians, of money laundering human trafficking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among those receiving guilty verdicts were Lt-General Manas Kongpan, who headed the Internal Security Operations Command for the entire South before his arrest in 2015; Pajjuban Angchotephan, a former president of the Satun Provincial Administrative Organisation; and Padang Besar Municipality\u2019s former mayor, Banjong Pongphon.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Manas and Pajjuban were each jailed for 20 years and Banjong for 10.<\/p>\n<p>Ten of the 54 defendants arraigned on the count of money-laundering were acquitted.<\/p>\n<p>The case related to the high-profile 2015 discovery of a mass grave in a jungle shelter in Sadao district in the border province of Satun, where traffickers had hidden their victims\u2019 remains.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the victims were ethnic Rohingya people from Myanmar and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that the defendants made an estimated Bt443 million from their activities \u2013 the money was laundered between 2011 and 2015 in Satun, Ranong, Songkhla and Krabi provinces.<\/p>\n<p>The jail terms delivered yesterday were on top of the punishments meted out two years ago for human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2017, the Criminal Court convicted Manas, Banjong, Pajjuban and dozens of their accomplices for trafficking 58 Rohingya victims.<\/p>\n<p>Banjong received a 78-year imprisonment, Pajjuban got 75 years and Manas was jailed for 27.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationmultimedia.com\/detail\/national\/30369397\">The Nation<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Criminal Court yesterday convicted 44 defendants, including a former high-ranking military officer and ex-local politicians, of money laundering human trafficking.
