{"id":2854,"date":"2019-08-12T14:48:37","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T14:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/?p=2854"},"modified":"2019-08-13T19:04:25","modified_gmt":"2019-08-13T19:04:25","slug":"thai-trawler-crew-arrive-in-bangkok-from-somalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/2019\/08\/12\/thai-trawler-crew-arrive-in-bangkok-from-somalia\/","title":{"rendered":"Thai trawler crew arrive in Bangkok from Somalia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eighteen Thai fishermen rescued from reportedly slave-like conditions on a trawler in Somalia returned to Bangkok on Monday as labour officials considered opening a human trafficking probe.<\/p>\n<p>The fishing crew arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport on Thai Airways flight TG581 from Dubai, where 14 of them had waited for another four workmates.<\/p>\n<p>They will meet Labour Minister MR Chatu Mongol Sonakul later on Monday to thank him for the government&#8217;s help in rescuing them from harsh conditions on board the<em>\u00a0Wadani 1<\/em>\u00a0off the Somalian coast.<\/p>\n<p>Short of both food and fuel, one of the crew sought help from a friend in Phuket on a video call. The Thai embassy in Kenya, which is responsible for Somalia, finally secured their return.<\/p>\n<p>The first group of 14 left Somalia for Dubai on Wednesday and were supposed to arrive in Bangkok the same day. But they later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/thailand\/general\/1727483\/stranded-fishing-crew-postpone-return-home-from-somalia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decided to stay in the Middle East city<\/a>\u00a0until they were joined by four coworkers from the same boat who had been delayed while their documents were processed.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour Ministry said the crew members will each receive up to 30,000 baht in cash from a fund that helps\u00a0Thai workers overseas. The money will be sent to their home provinces.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the crew are from Buri Ram province. The rest are from Phetchabun and Surin.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said it wil open an investigation to determine whether the fishermen&#8217;s plight was a case of human trafficking.
