DELGADO<\/span><\/span><span class=\"creditSm lg:fs16 c-gray700 ml2 mr4\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"creditSm lg:fs16 ls0 block sm:inline\">Associated Press<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\"><span class=\"smallTimestamp lg:largeTimestamp pb1 c-gray600\"><time datetime=\"2025-12-18 09:05:43\">Dec 18, 2025<\/time><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AP) \u2014 Thailand on Thursday helped launch a global effort to fight the spread of online scams that include criminal enterprises based largely in Southeast Asia estimated to bilk billions of dollars annually from victims around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand&#8217;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime hosted a conference in Bangkok on Wednesday and Thursday culminating in the announcement of the new initiative called the Global Partnership Against Online Scams.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/online-3-scaled.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-6130\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/online-3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1201\" height=\"801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/online-3-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/online-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/online-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/online-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/online-3-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.thaianti-humantraffickingaction.org\/Home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/online-3-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1201px) 100vw, 1201px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said in his keynote speech Wednesday that online scams \u201creveal a deeper problem \u2014 a collective vulnerability that no country can address alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The partnership agreement signed by conference participants Thailand, Bangladesh, Nepal, Peru and the United Arab Emirates will include political commitment, law enforcement, victim protection and public awareness and cross-border collaboration, a statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The conference received assistance from the private sector including internet giants Meta and TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Meta, the corporate owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, presented a threat report underlining the increased use of artificial intelligence by scam networks and protocols the company is using in its attempts to stop scams on its social media platforms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"r1udwkp5 d1uy5mhj articleBody mb32\" data-block-type=\"text\" data-dropcap=\"false\">\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Paragraph links\">Social media application TikTok signed on to the conference&#8217;s closing statement, becoming one of the first private sector members of the partnership.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"r1udwkp5 d1uy5mhj articleBody mb32\" data-block-type=\"text\" data-dropcap=\"false\">\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Paragraph links\">TikTok, which primarily focuses on short-form videos is one of the world&#8217;s most popular social media platforms but has faced challenges from various governments including the U.S. over its Chinese ownership, the European Union over transparency breaches, Canada regarding child protection protocols and data sharing in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"r1udwkp5 d1uy5mhj articleBody mb32\" data-block-type=\"text\" data-dropcap=\"false\">\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Paragraph links\">Scam centers, which extort money from victims online through bogus investment schemes and faked loved interests, have proliferated across Southeast Asia. U.N.
