BANGKOK, 18 September 2015 (NNT) – The government is intensifying countermeasures on human trafficking and illegal fishing practices, warning that involved government officials will be prosecuted, the Deputy PM says.

After attending the meeting of human trafficking and illegal fishing elimination committee, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Gen Prawit Wongsuwon stated that the Royal Thai Navy and the Marine Police have been appointed to patrol border areas to prevent illegal migration and human trafficking.

He said that Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha stressed in this meeting that all operations should be carried out on par with international standards, while the government and the Navy are now providing assistance to the affected fishermen and entrepreneurs who cannot continue their occupations due the government’s human trafficking crackdown.

The Deputy PM has further said that the government has been constantly proceeding operations to solve human trafficking issues, and is set to intensify the measures. Any government officials involved with human trafficking will be prosecuted.

He added that the amendment process of laws related to human trafficking is expected to be completed on 15 November 2015.
