Thailand is planning to turn one of the training centers into the victim identification center as part of its ongoing effort to combat human trafficking.

On Nov 22, 2021. Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan chaired the 5/2021 virtual meeting of inter-agencies Anti-Human Trafficking Committee and the 2/2021 Committee on Prevention of Official Complicity in Human Trafficking.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit was satisfied with the progress on Thailand’s anti-human trafficking efforts. The report showed that relevant agencies had completed 80 % of the 15 recommendations made by the U.S. in 2021 Trafficking in Person (TIP) Report and worked closely with NGOs and International Organizations, such as IJM, IOM, and ILO.

The Meeting approved 1) the capacity-building project for anti-human trafficking personnel with the focus on forced labor, 2) the plan to turn the training center at the Immigration Bureau, Don Mueng District, into the victim identification center, which will also serve as the coordination center for the inter-agencies practitioners, and 3) agreed in principle to the amendment of the anti-human trafficking law regarding the right of trafficking victims to obtain compensation from assets forfeited from traffickers.

The Meeting also approved the establishment of the task force on coordinating and monitoring the anti-human trafficking efforts, to be chaired by Pol.Lt.Gen. Surachate Hakparn, to support the anti-human trafficking efforts as well as the work on other related criminal cases.

The Meeting took note of the progress on official complicity cases, especially “The Best bar” case under jurisdiction of Bang Sue Police Station, as well as cases of officials involved in illegal smuggling of migrant workers who are potential trafficking victims. 

At the end of the Meeting, Deputy Prime Minister instructed all agencies to ensure that their officials completely refrain from complicity in human trafficking and illegal smuggling activities and reiterated that he would follow up with this issue closely. Deputy Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to all agencies for having successfully driven their tasks, despite COVID -19 pandemic, and assured that assistance would be provided to all agencies when needed.
